Most skincare advice is written for people who wake up gently, do a ten-step routine, and head to a low-key day. That's not SoMa. SoMa is a BART commute through direct sun, a full workday, a gym session, a bar crawl on Folsom Street, and a 2am rideshare home. Your skin needs to keep up.
We're based in SoMa. This guide is written from the neighborhood, for the neighborhood.
Why SoMa Is Different for Skin
SoMa's built environment creates skincare conditions that most guides don't account for:
- UV reflection off concrete and glass. SoMa's wide streets, warehouse facades, and tech campus glass amplify sun exposure compared to shaded residential neighborhoods. You're getting more UV here even on overcast days.
- Air quality. SoMa sits between freeways, industrial areas, and the Bay. Pollution particles accelerate skin oxidation and dullness. Antioxidant skincare (Vitamin C, niacinamide) matters more here than in quieter neighborhoods.
- Late nights + disrupted sleep. SoMa's nightlife and the neighborhood's general keep-late-hours energy means many residents are dealing with tired, dehydrated skin more often than people elsewhere in SF.
- Event prep. Folsom Street Fair, Pride, EndUp nights, leather bar marathons — SoMa hosts some of the most physically demanding queer events in the world. Your skin care routine needs to work for those days too.
The Daily SoMa Routine
Same three steps as everyone else — just applied with intention for this specific environment.
Morning — The Commute Prep
CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, Neutrogena Hydro Boost, EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46. In that order. The SPF is the most important step — you're about to walk through some of the highest urban UV exposure in SF. Don't skip it because it's cloudy. The marine layer does not block UVA rays. Your skin doesn't know it's foggy.
Night — The Recovery Step
After SoMa nights — whether that's an endurance tech sprint or a late bar night — your skin needs barrier repair. Cleanse with CeraVe to remove pollution buildup, then moisturize. That's it. Night is when your skin actually repairs. Don't overcomplicate it.
Folsom Street Fair: The SoMa Skin Exam
The Folsom Street Fair happens every September right in the heart of SoMa — Howard and 8th, stretching through the neighborhood. It's a full outdoor day in direct San Francisco sun, surrounded by tens of thousands of people. It's also the most demanding skincare day of the year for SoMa residents.
The night before:
- Hydrate well — drink water, apply your moisturizer twice if your skin tends to run dry.
- Full skincare routine. Don't skip it because you're excited for tomorrow.
- Get enough sleep. Tired skin shows under full-day sun.
Morning of Folsom:
- Full cleanser + moisturizer + SPF routine.
- If wearing makeup or any drag: NYX Setting Spray before and after application.
- Bring a travel-size SPF for midday reapplication — especially on the face, neck, and ears.
Late Night SoMa Bar Skin
SF Eagle. Powerhouse. Oasis. The Stud. SoMa's queer bars are hot, loud, physically packed, and go late. Your skin is dealing with heat, sweat, possible cigarette smoke near the outdoor areas, and general late-night stress cortisol.
The move before going out: clean face, light moisturizer, done. Don't apply heavy products before a hot bar — they'll sit on top of your skin and mix with sweat. The Hydro Boost is light enough that it absorbs fully and doesn't feel heavy in a packed bar.
The move after getting home: clean your face. Seriously. Whatever time it is, whatever state you're in — even a quick CeraVe cleanse before bed makes a visible difference the next morning. Pollution and bar environment residue sitting on your face overnight is the #1 cause of the "rough skin" that builds up over time.

The SoMa Skin Manifesto
SoMa doesn't do fussy. The aesthetic here is functional, direct, and real. Your skincare should match: three products, under four minutes, every day. Not because you're lazy but because that's enough. SPF in the morning, cleanser and moisturizer at night. You'll look better in six months than people who do nothing, and you'll be spending less time on it than people doing ten steps.
That's the SoMa approach. Efficient. Intentional. Effective.
