San Francisco has always punched above its weight in indie culture — music, food, tech, fashion. Skincare is no different. The Bay Area has produced some genuinely exceptional beauty brands, from a Castro shop that's been a queer institution for 45+ years to biotech-informed skincare startups and zero-waste indie apothecaries.
This guide focuses on brands with a meaningful SF connection — either founded here, headquartered here, or with deep roots in the SF queer community. We've also included a few brands that are widely stocked at local SF retailers and closely associated with the city's beauty culture.
San Francisco-Founded Brands
Benefit Cosmetics — The Castro OG
Founded in 1976 by twins Jean and Jane Ford in — yes — the Castro district. Benefit started as "The Face Place" and became one of the world's biggest cosmetics brands while keeping its SF roots. Their brow products and blushes are beloved by both everyday wearers and drag queens. The Gimme Brow+ gel is a standout product for natural-looking brow definition.
Best products: Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Fiber Gel ($24), Hoola Bronzer ($36), BADgal BANG! Mascara ($27)
Where to buy: Sephora (in-store Union Square or online), Ulta, Amazon
Vapour Beauty — Clean Color, SF Aesthetic
Organic, clean beauty with strong San Francisco distribution. Their Aura Multi-Use Blush stick is a cult product — works on cheeks, lips, and eyes. Built for people who want fewer products that do more. Very aligned with the minimalist queer aesthetic popular in SF's tech-adjacent queer community.
Best products: Aura Multi-Use Blush ($28), Mesmerize Eye Color ($24)

Bay Area Brands With Cult Followings
Ursa Major — Made for SF's Active Lifestyle
Vermont-founded but with major SF presence and distribution, Ursa Major makes clean skincare for people who are actually active — hikers, cyclists, anyone who gets sweaty and needs something that actually works. Their Essential Face Wipes have a loyal following in SF for post-workout use before nightlife. The Fortifying Face Balm is excellent for SF's cold, windy fog season.
Best products: Essential Face Wipes ($16 for 20 count), Fortifying Face Balm ($48)
OSEA Malibu — Ocean-Powered, SF-Stocked
This Southern California brand has a substantial presence in SF retail and a loyal following in the city's wellness community. The Hyaluronic Sea Serum is one of the best under-$50 hydrating serums available — and it's a fantastic prep step before drag makeup. Vegan, certified organic, and B Corp certified.
Best products: Hyaluronic Sea Serum ($55), Ocean Cleanser ($44)
Where to buy: oseamalibu.com, select SF boutiques
Queer SF Beauty Culture
Does Your Mother Know — Castro Institution Since 1979
This is less a skincare brand and more an SF institution. The Castro shop has been selling fun, kitschy, and queer-adjacent beauty and lifestyle products for 45+ years. Walking in is an experience — the walls are covered in products you won't find anywhere else. Great for exploring drag aesthetics, finding unique gifts, and absorbing a piece of SF queer history.
Address: 4079 18th St, San Francisco, CA (Castro neighborhood)
Vibe: Quintessentially SF queer. Go in person.
Where to Find Local SF Skincare
- Hayes Valley: Several indie apothecaries and clean beauty boutiques. Walk the main strip for new discoveries.
- Castro neighborhood: Does Your Mother Know, plus smaller boutiques along Castro and 18th St.
- Mission District: Sephora at 22nd, plus several neighborhood beauty supply shops.
- Union Square Sephora: Flagship store with the widest selection in SF. Staff are often highly knowledgeable about drag and queer-relevant products.
- Rainbow Grocery (Mission): Great for clean beauty and indie skincare brands that don't show up at chain retailers.
SF Skincare Tip: Fog Season Adjustments
San Francisco's famously cold, foggy summers create a unique skincare challenge: you're not getting the UV exposure of a typical summer, but SPF is still essential (UV penetrates fog). The cold wind and marine layer can also dehydrate skin quickly. During fog season (June–August), we recommend adding a facial oil or slightly richer moisturizer to your routine on top of your usual Hydro Boost.
